SPRINGFIELD, Va. — A single-vehicle crash in Springfield on Tuesday afternoon left one woman dead, two men injured, and two dogs hurt, according to Fairfax County Police.
Authorities said the crash occurred around 3:18 p.m. on Old Keene Mill Road near Tiverton Drive. Investigators report that the vehicle was traveling in the area when it struck a guardrail for reasons that remain under investigation.
Police confirmed that the adult female driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Two adult male passengers were also inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. One was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is receiving medical care.
Emergency responders also found two dogs inside the vehicle. Both animals were injured in the crash and were taken into the custody of animal control personnel. Officials said one of the dogs may need to be euthanized due to the severity of its injuries.
Fairfax County Police crash reconstruction detectives remain on scene working to determine what caused the vehicle to leave its path and strike the guardrail. No additional details have been released regarding possible contributing factors.
As investigators continued their work, eastbound lanes of Old Keene Mill Road at Hunter Village Drive were closed to traffic. Westbound lanes were partially open under police direction, though drivers experienced significant delays in the area.
