The Derry and Latrobe communities continue to honor and remember the life of Nicholas J. Nelson, whose passing left a profound impact on family, friends, students, colleagues, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Though his life was far too short, Nick’s legacy of faith, education, service, and compassion continues to inspire those whose lives he touched.
A dedicated educator and mentor, Nick was widely respected for his passion for learning and his commitment to helping others succeed. With academic expertise in robotics, mechatronics, and automation, he combined technical knowledge with an exceptional ability to connect with students. His enthusiasm for education made him a trusted mentor who encouraged young people to pursue their goals with confidence and determination.
Nick served as Chairman of the Journeyman Machining Technology Program and Chairman and Assistant Professor of the Robotics and Electronics Engineering Technology Program at Westmoreland County Community College’s Advanced Technology Center. Through these roles, he played a significant part in preparing future generations for successful careers in technology and advanced manufacturing. His students remember him not only for his knowledge but also for his patience, encouragement, and belief in their potential.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Nick’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Chelsea, and a loving father to Charlotte and Benjamin. Family members and friends often spoke of the happiness he found in spending time with his children and the deep love he shared with those closest to him.
His strong Christian faith guided every aspect of his life. As an active member of Pleasant Unity United Methodist Church, Nick faithfully served his congregation and lived according to the values of kindness, humility, generosity, and service.
Remembered for his warm personality, uplifting spirit, and willingness to help others, Nicholas J. Nelson leaves behind a legacy that will endure through his family, students, colleagues, and community. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever honored for the lives he enriched and the example he set.
